How to create strong passwords (without memorising complicated formulas)

Passwords are the first line of defence in your digital life. They protect email, social networks, bank accounts, documents and even personal photos.

Yet many people still use weak passwords like “123456” or “password” — and attackers love that.

The good news is: creating strong passwords doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how.

1. Forget impossible-to-remember formulas

For years we were told a good password had to look like this: A!p4R@#9zT%

Yes, it’s strong… but impossible to memorise.

Today the rule has changed: length matters more than complexity. A long, simple and unique passphrase is far more effective than a jumble of random characters.

Example: CoffeeOnRainyMondays!

It’s long, easy to remember and hard to guess.

2. Use a personal phrase or combination

Pick a phrase that means something to you and add a unique twist.

  • Use a memory, a place or a favourite expression.
  • Mix upper/lower case letters and add a symbol at the end.

Examples:

  • ILoveTravellingToTheAzores!
  • MyCatIsCalledLoki2024
  • FridaysAreForPizza:)

These phrases are between 20 and 30 characters long — and that’s great!

3. Never reuse passwords

Using the same password across accounts is like having one key for every door. If one account is breached, the rest are at risk.

Solution: use a password manager (e.g., KeePass, Bitwarden, 1Password, NordPass). It stores and generates unique, strong passwords automatically.

4. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)

Even the best password can be stolen.

2FA adds a second barrier: a temporary code from an authenticator app or your phone.

Even if someone learns your password, they can’t get in without the second factor.

5. Test your passwords safely

Check if a password has appeared in data breaches using reputable sites such as:

Never enter your real password on dubious sites — use well-known platforms only.

Conclusion

Creating strong passwords doesn’t have to be a puzzle.

The recipe is:

  • Long, unique passphrases
  • A trustworthy password manager
  • Two-factor authentication

With these three steps, you’ll protect your accounts effectively and simply.

Strong passwords, safer digital life.
