WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook: 5 steps to secure your accounts today

Social networks and messaging apps are part of everyday life. It’s where we talk to friends, share moments and, often, even handle work.
They’re also favourite targets for attackers. Unauthorised access can mean data theft, exposed messages, fraud, or even losing accounts for good.
The good news? With a few quick tweaks, you can greatly strengthen the security of your WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook accounts — today.
1. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)
2FA is the most important step for any account.
Even if someone learns your password, they can’t log in without the second verification code.
How to enable:
- WhatsApp: Settings → Account → Two-step verification → Turn on → Set a 6-digit PIN.
- Instagram & Facebook: Settings → Security → Two-factor authentication → Choose an authenticator app or SMS.
Tip: Prefer an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, etc.) instead of SMS — it’s more secure.
2. Use unique, strong passwords
Don’t reuse the same password across multiple accounts.
A breach on one site can compromise every account that shares that password.
See our guide: “How to create strong passwords (without memorising complicated formulas)”.
3. Review logged-in devices and active sessions
Each platform shows where your account is open. Check for anything unusual:
- Instagram: Settings → Security → Login activity.
- Facebook: Settings → Security and login → Where you’re logged in.
- WhatsApp Web: Three dots → Linked devices → Sign out of unknown sessions.
Sign out of anything you don’t recognise immediately.
4. Beware of suspicious links and messages
Phishing on social networks is on the rise.
- Never click links promising prizes, discounts or alarming alerts.
- Be wary of messages with mistakes or urgent requests.
- If a friend sends something odd, confirm with them before opening.
Compromised accounts often spread malicious links automatically.
5. Revisit your privacy settings
Limit who can see your posts, message you or add you.
- Instagram: Settings → Privacy → Consider Private account for more control.
- Facebook: Settings → Privacy → Adjust post visibility and personal info.
- WhatsApp: Settings → Privacy → Choose who can see your photo, status and Last seen.
The less public info, the lower the chance of targeted attacks.
Conclusion
Securing your social media doesn’t require technical skills — just a few minutes of attention.
Turning on 2FA, reviewing active sessions and tightening privacy already puts you ahead of most users.
Your account is yours — keep it secure.
